The City of Baytown has sent a letter notifying the committee of petitioners who seek to repeal Article VII “Automated Red Light Enforcement” of the City Code of Ordinances that the petition does not meet the requirements set out by the City’s Charter. Since the petition does not meet these requirements, it must be rejected.
The wording of the petition received on December 29, calls for the repeal of a current ordinance, making it a referendum petition. For a referendum petition to be accepted, it must have been filed within 20 days of Council approval of the ordinance. Because the petition was not timely filed, it must be rejected.
