The City of Baytown has completed installation of three new red light cameras as part of its red light camera safety initiative at key intersections in the city.
The new cameras were installed at the intersection of Garth Road and West Cedar Bayou Lynchburg Road ; with the northbound, southbound, and eastbound approaches being monitored. During the warning period which began January 30, drivers who run a red light at this intersection will be sent a warning letter. The state mandated warning period lasts for 30 days. Beginning on March 1, violators will receive a $75 notice of civil violation in the mail.
The new cameras join ten others currently installed at intersections throughout the city. Cameras identify vehicles that illegally proceed through an intersection after the traffic light turns red. The registered owner of the vehicle involved is mailed a violation notice only after all photographic evidence has been reviewed and approved by the camera operating company and a Baytown Police Officer.
Vehicle owners who receive notification of a violation are given an internet link where they can view both a still photo and a video of their vehicle in the intersection. Internet access is available at Sterling Municipal if the individual does not have internet access. If the individual wishes to contest the violation, they may request a hearing before the hearing officer. If found in violation at the initial hearing, a second appeal to the Baytown Municipal Court Judge is available.
sad to see with all of the controversy about the red light cameras including increasing accidents at these locations, a petition with over 1300 signatures wanting to stop the cameras and numerous documented abuses by the city that they would want to put more cameras up. The city projects receipts of $2.7 million from these cameras this year 55% siphoned out of Baytown and sent to Arizona, could that be the real answer?
