Warning Period Over at Garth Road Intersection

The City of Baytown reminds residents that the warning period at three new red light cameras is over and notices of violation will now be sent to the owners of vehicles that run red lights at the intersection.  The cameras are part of the City’s red light camera safety initiative at key intersections throughout Baytown .

The new cameras were installed last month at the intersection of Garth Road and West Cedar Bayou Lynchburg Road ; with the northbound, southbound, and eastbound approaches being monitored.  During the warning period which ran January 30- February 28, drivers who ran a red light at this intersection were sent a warning letter. The state mandated warning period lasted for 30 days. As of March 1, violators will receive a $75 notice of civil violation in the mail.

The new cameras join ten others currently installed at intersections throughout the city. Cameras identify vehicles that illegally proceed through an intersection after the traffic light turns red. The registered owner of the vehicle involved is mailed a violation notice only after all photographic evidence has been reviewed and approved by the camera operating company and a Baytown Police Officer.

Vehicle owners who receive notification of a violation are given an internet link where they can view both a still photo and a video of their vehicle in the intersection.  Internet access is available at Sterling Municipal if the individual does not have internet access.  If the individual wishes to contest the violation, they may request a hearing before the hearing officer. If found in violation at the initial hearing, a second appeal to the Baytown Municipal Court Judge is available.

The 2010 Census will be here soon and the City of Baytown wants to remind residents to get counted.

A Census snapshotWho: All U.S. residents must be counted — both citizens and non-citizens.

What: The Census is a count of everyone residing in the United States . With one of the shortest questionnaires in history, the 2010 Census asks for name, gender, age, race, ethnicity, relationship and whether you own or rent your home. It takes only about 10 minutes for the average household to complete.

When: The Census Bureau will mail or deliver forms to every house this month. Households should complete and mail back their forms upon receipt. April 1, 2010, is Census Day, the official day of the population count. All 2010 Census responses should represent the household as it exists on this day.

Why: The U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years to count the population and determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Importance of Census data

Census data directly affects how more than $400 billion per year in federal funding is distributed to state and local governments. The data is then used to determine locations for retail stores, schools, hospitals, new housing developments and other community facilities. Participation in the census is easy, important and safe, and your participation is vital.

The City of Baytown will provide a number of updates and reminders between now and Census Day (April 1) via its website, Channel 16, and Twitter.
